Supervised Consumption Services
OPS, SIS/SCS, & CTS
What DOES OPS, SIS/SCS, & CTS stand for?
Overdose Prevention Sites, Supervised Injection Sites, Supervised Consumption Sites, and Consumption and Treatment Services.
What are OPS, SIS/SCS?
OPS, SIS/SCS are life-saving health services that provide a safe and hygienic environment for people to inject pre-obtained drugs under the supervision of qualified staff ( Toronto Public Health, 2018).
Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) is the Ontario provincial government’s new catch-all name for OPS and SIS/SCS. The CTS guidelines have been detrimental to community health—resulting in the closure and defunding of many sites in Ontario, and a number of new barriers to effective, low-barrier harm reduction services.
Why are these services important?
International research shows that supervised injection services reduce drug overdoses, save lives and limit the spread of HIV and hepatitis C related to unsafe injection practices. In addition to supervised injection, individuals using these health services will be provided with sterile injection supplies, education on overdose prevention and intervention, health counselling services and referrals to drug treatment, housing, income support and other services. You can read more about supervised injection services on the City of Toronto’s website.
